If your network environment is set up correctly, we can help you find and fix errors quickly and easily. Follow our recommendations for a stable network environment.
Network equipment
We recommend that you have a router manufactured at least within the last 6 or 7 years with at least the wireless Wi-Fi standard IEEE 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) and Gigabit Ethernet. Count on at least 1 000 SEK excl. VAT as a decent baseline. It's smart to spend a little extra for good infrastructure, since interruptions in service may mean lost sales and it might cost more than it's worth in the long run.
It is smart not to overcomplicate things unnecessarily. If it's enough to connect all your equipment directly to the router, you should do so. But an unadministrated gigabit switch for extra connections is not a problem. If your premises are large and you need the extra range for your mobile devices we can recommend that you set up access points from Ubiquiti as an example, and turn off the Wi-Fi antenna in your router instead. Keep in mind to install a new access point just at the end of the range of the others, or they will otherwise compete with each other and there may be worse coverage as a whole.
Concerning Wi-Fi it is relatively important for your mobile devices that your router or access points are capable of using dual-band broadcasting. The 2,4 GHz band, the older and most common Wi-Fi standard, is also used by many other standards, such as Bluetooth, meaning it is not always a stable connection because of noise. We recommend that you connect your mobile devices via the 5 GHz band where it is possible, and a router that is capable of using the 5 GHz band.
If you have a physical fiscal control unit to your cash register you can use the cash register for a small amount of time without an internet connection. Most card payment terminals can work with a handful of customer cards without internet as well, but usually not company cards. Payment terminals have a limit to how many transactions you can save before you need to connect to the internet and empty the terminal. This limit is usually not very high.
That's why we can recommend a complement to your fiber connection in the form of a 4G- or 5G-router for emergencies, if your fiber connection should be disrupted for a longer time. Consider using a different provider than the one you buy fiber from, if there should be a problem at the providers side.
Internet for POS equipment
Onslip POS systems talk to all devices over the network, so have a separate network for the POS equipment only. For wireless devices to work optimally, it is important that the WiFi network saved in the device is the network where the rest of the POS equipment is connected.
Fixed internet connection via internet cable
For a stable internet connection to the stationary cash registers or the payment terminal, we recommend connecting the devices with an internet cable (network cable) rated Cat 6 or higher.
Wireless internet connection (wifi)
Wireless devices such as card terminals, ordering devices, kitchen screens and mobile cash registers need a wireless connection to a wireless internet (Wi-Fi). In order to ensure a stable connection for wireless devices, the wireless network needs to be locked to only the POS devices.
Settings in your router
Log in to your router and lock all devices to static IP addresses instead of letting the router assign IP addresses via DHCP. This will greatly facilitate, for example, the connection of card terminals and printers. NOTE! Keep in mind that you cannot have two routers connected to the same network.
Large room?
Premises with large spaces or concrete walls can drastically degrade wireless internet connectivity. For a large room with varying connectivity, you can install WiFi access points.
Internet speed
We recommend an internet speed of at least 100 Mbit/s over the fiber network.
Measure WiFi coverage
Download a WiFi measurement app to your phone to see if there are any gaps where the signal is not strong enough and where you could potentially set up an access point to cover gaps in the signal.
Password for WiFi
Make sure you always have the password available in case you need to connect new devices or reconnect an existing device that has lost connection. The password is often found on the back of your router.
IT technician - Telia
To create a reliable IT environment, we recommend having an IT technician install the network if you are unsure how to proceed. Onslip recommends Telia as IT installer, read more here.
Responsibility
All venues are unique, meaning all internet and network environments are unique. The combination of internet service providers, routers, switches, access points and cables are endless. Therefore it is the customers responsibility that the network is set up properly. Onslip are not, and cannot be responsible, for the customers network and will not give in-depth network support.
