For the POS system to communicate with your printers—whether they are standard receipt printers, ticket printers, or kitchen printers—they must be on the same local network. If communication between the printer and the POS needs to be restored, it may in some cases be because the printer has not received a network address from the router and has instead activated its built-in fallback address. Follow these steps to quickly restore the connection.
Step 1: Check the printer’s IP address
Start by finding out what network address the printer currently has.
- Turn off the printer.
- Hold down the Feed button and turn on the printer.
- Release the Feed button when the printer begins to print a receipt.
- Press the Feed button once more to print the complete network information.
-
Look for the IP Address on the receipt.
*Technical note: If the address is 192.168.1.251, this means the printer was unable to connect to the router in time and has therefore activated its fallback IP address. Proceed to the next step to troubleshoot the router connection.
Step 2: Verify the physical network connection
- Check the lights on the back of the printer, right where the network cable is plugged in.
- If the lights are on or flashing, there is a physical connection. Proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Change the port and restart the printer
If the port is no longer assigning a network address to the printer, try connecting the cable to another available port.
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the network cable from the router (or switch) and plug it into another available port.
- Hold down the Feed button, turn on the printer, and release the button when printing begins. Press it again to print the status receipt
- Check the IP address on the new receipt. If it now has a standard address for your network (often something similar to the cash register), you can proceed to Step 4.
*If the address is still .251, make sure the cash register and printer are connected to the same network equipment. In our network guide, you’ll find more smart tips on how to maximize the stability of your internet connection.
Step 4: Activate the printer in the POS
Once the printer has been assigned a correct IP address, it’s ready to be reconnected to the POS.
- Open the menu in the Onslip app (the three lines in the top-left corner).
- Go to Settings and then select Devices.
- Find the SNBC printer in the list and enable it by clicking the blue gear icon on the right.
- Close the settings and try printing to verify that communication has been restored.
